Abstract

Universities have compartmentalized science into small silos, but real system design problems require integrating the disciplines. To some, this "integration" of disciplines just means the disciplines talk to each other. "Systems Engineering" has developed a dubious reputation as soft, without theoretical support. But System Design means something else to me. If we want to integrate disciplines, we cannot start at the state of the art of either one. We must start at a more fundamental level to pose the design questions, and theoretical guidance is needed to do that.
