Over the last decade, the installed wind energy capacity in the US has increased by a factor of 100 with a current capability of 60 GW generated by 45,000 turbine. That is enough energy to power the equivalent of roughly 15 million American homes. Wind power has been a US success story fueled by technology, R&D, and innovation. This presentation will present some basic foundations of wind energy and show how the industry has developed and is evolving into the future. A technology emphasis will be placed on aerodynamic and acoustics of the rotor and detailed concepts for wind turbine sound mitigation that are under development at GE Wind Energy will be shown.
