Sample preparation

·       AccuteX EDM GE-43SAi to machine metal samples to desirable dimension without residual stress

·       Complete metallography lab with capabilities for automatic grinding, polishing, fine sample sectioning.

Furnaces and facilities for heat treatment

·       One high temperature tube furnace (1700°C max operating temperature) and one high temperature box furnace (1200°C max operating temperature)

Mechanical, fatigue and creep testing

·       Cortest slow strain rate machine coupled with induction heater and environment cell for tensile/compressive test under high temperature and/or corrosive environment

•        Instron 3 kN Testing Frame which can perform tensile, fatigue cycle tests of materials and structures at high temperature up to 1000 °C Sample preparation

·       ATS creep equipment with testing temperature up to 1000°C equipment, with both tensile and compressive mode

High Performance Computing

For the modeling and simulation part, code development, debugging, testing and data analysis, the following hardware and software for large-scale high-performance computing are available at the Virginia Tech: Advanced Research Computing that consists of Tinkercliffs (41,984 cores), Cascades (7,288 cores), Infer (1,696 cores), DragonsTooth (1,152 cores), Huckleberry (280 cores), with key features include large-scale CPU, machine learning/interences, deep learning applications, data intensive problems, etc.  (https://arc.vt.edu/).

Nanoscale Characterization and Fabrication Laboratory (NCFL)

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM): JEOL JEM 2100 - Analytical scanning/transmission electron microscope equipped with EDS

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM):  JEOL IT-500HR analytical FEG SEM offering a seamless link from optical to high magnification SEM images and automated large area imaging and spectroscopy analyses; FEI Quanta 600 FEG Environmental SEM equipped with EDS, heating stage, mechanical testing fixture
