Many complex systems are characterized by physics at a wide range of scales, for which first-principle-based simulations resolving all scales are prohibitively expensive to run. Consequently, practical simulations rely on low-fidelity models with approximate closure models, which introduce model-form uncertainties and diminish their predictive capabilities. At the Data-Enabled Computational Mechanics Laboratory, we leverage modern data-analytics methods to advance the understanding and predictive modeling of complex, multi-scale physical systems such as turbulent flows and particle-laden multiphase flows. Such systems play important roles in a number of engineering sectors such as aerospace, ocean, civil, and chemical engineering.

Dr. Heng Xiao

The Data-Enabled Computational Mechanics Laboratory is directed by Dr. Heng Xiao. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, a master’s degree in Mathematics from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden, and a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from Princeton University, USA.

From 2009 to 2012 Dr. Xiao worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher/Lecturer at the Institute of Fluid Dynamics at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. In January 2013, he joined the Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering at Virginia Tech as an Assistant Professor.
