Abstract: With an aging fleet that must contend with increasingly asymmetric threats and a neglected industrial base that can’t deliver new systems to meet the rate of attrition, let alone grow, the US Navy is embracing a novel, distributed and resilient fleet architecture that relies on low-cost autonomous systems to enable the future fleet. Billions of dollars are flowing into an ever-growing list of VC backed Defense Tech startups all racing to meet the need and disrupt the homogeneous military industrial complex. Will the vision of the future fleet become reality? Not without a concerted effort on a scale not seen since the Manhattan Project or the Apollo Missions. Bio: Joe Dvorak graduated in 2014 with a B.S. in Aerospace & Ocean Engineering. He’s spent the first 12 years of his career working for the US Navy, US Coast Guard, joining Saronic as a fledgling startup and now supports DARPA in the Tactical Technologies Office.
