Dr. David Finkleman - Aerospace Engineering '63
Dr. David “Doc” Finkleman, an honors graduate of Virginia Tech, recently returned to campus for his first visit since he departed Blacksburg in 1963. After leaving Virginia Tech, he received his Master of Science degree in aeronautics and astronautics and Doctor of Philosophy degree in aerodynamics and gas dynamics from MIT.
He retired from government service in 2003 after having worked in the space business with the Air Force, Army, and Navy for 40 years, as both a reserve officer and in civilian status. His career has included a membership in the Senior Executive Service (SES).
He also served as Director of Analysis and Chief Technical Officer for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and U.S. Space Command, Peterson Air Force Base, CO. In this role he led U.S. and Canadian personnel responsible for all analytical and technical matters regarding U.S. military satellite systems; space surveillance; ballistic missile warning and defense; and all North American aerospace sovereignty and control capabilities.
Since Virginia Tech alumnus Richard Wand left Blacksburg in 1996, he has found a multitude of ways to develop his profession as well as engage others in his chosen field. Having degrees in both aerospace and ocean engineering, Wand is now president of MJ Engineering in Westerville, Ohio, a full service machine and system design consulting firm that applies state of the art technology to industrial operations.
