AOE Advising - Withdrawal Policy
To all Engineering Students
This message is to call your attention to the Course Withdrawal Policy
that is now in effect. Please read this message carefully as
it will explain this option that may be available to
you.
COURSE WITHDRAWAL APPLICATION DEADLINE--
****Revised policy approved Spring 2005 . Read all bulleted items below***
a) Undergraduate Students may apply the Course Withdrawal Policy to any undergraduate course up to a maximum of six (6) credit hours.
For complete review of the policy, go to the online 2005-06 Undergraduate Course Catalog and Academic Policies, .Grades, Grade Points, and other Credits.
found here: undergradcatalog.registrar.vt.edu/0506/acapolicies/grades.html
b) REVISED: undergraduate students must formally request to apply the Course Withdrawal Policy to a course no later than the FRIDAY OF THE LAST FULL WEEK OF CLASSES FOR EACH TERM.
Deadlines appear with other important academic deadlines in the deadline listing of the online Time Table of Classes:
registrar.vt.edu/registration/calendars/fall.html
c) REVISED: If a REGISTRATION HOLD exists at the time of application to apply the Course Withdrawal Policy to a course, you must take action to remove the registration hold(s) within five (5) working days of the application or the request will be
voided. Students are responsible for resolving their registration holds with the appropriate university office.
d) Students interested in using this policy should discuss this option with their academic advisor to assure appropriate curricular planning.
Each student has 6 credit hours that they may withdraw from.
HOWEVER, these 6 credit hours includes any hours already used in
applying the Freshman Rule. In other words, if you used
4 credit hours of Freshman Rule, you only have 2 credits of Course
Withdrawal left to use.
Applying the Course Withdrawal Policy results in a student receiving a
'W' grade in a course. This course remains on your transcript and
the 'W' grade does not affect your GPA.
If you do not wish to receive an A-F or P-F grade in a course being taken
this current semester, and wish to apply this policy, please come to 212
Hancock Hall and obtain a form. You must have Course Withdrawal
credits available to you to invoke this action. If you submit a
form and do not have available Course Withdrawal credits, then
we cannot and will not process this request and you
will receive a grade as assigned by your course instructor.
Remember, if you have previously used Freshman Rule to remove a grade
from your GPA calculation, then these credits count towards your
available Course Withdrawal credits.
Finally, if you use the Course Withdrawal Policy for a course, these
credits do not count towards the credits required for graduation.
If the particular course you choose to withdraw from is required to earn
a degree, the course must be repeated.
Special note #1:If you apply Course Withdrawal to the
Phys 2305-6 course, this will include a withdrawal from the associated
lab for these courses. Both the lecture course and the lab
must be repeated if you use the Course Withdrawal option
and if you intend to pursue an engineering degree.
Special Note #2: If you have a block on your account (for example an unpaid parking ticket, or unpaid tuition), we cannot and will not process your course withdrawal request. You can determine if you have a block (or hold) on your account by trying to access dropadd. You cannot access dropadd if there is a block on your account. We recommend taking care of the block before submitting the form
All Course Withdrawal forms must be completed by the student and signed by the student and the
student's Engineering Academic Advisor prior to submission to the Associate Dean of Academic
Affairs for Engineering's office.
If you have any questions relative to this notice, please email us at registrar@vt.edu
