Data format

Velocity measurements were made in grids to reveal the whole cross section of the tip vortex flow (file grid.dat). This file contains ASCII tab delimited data in 25 columns. For an explanation of the conditions and symbols see the parent publications. The following table lists the contents of each column.

Velocity measurements were also made in profiles to reveal the structure of the spiral wake (file profile.dat). The location of the profiles in the flow cross-section and the profile numbering system are illustrated in the following figure.

The file profile.dat contains ASCII tab delimited data in 28 columns. For an explanation of the conditions and symbols see the parent publications. The following table lists the contents of each column.

The position coordinate system used here is defined as follows. x is measured downstream from the leading edge of the wing tip, y inboard parallel to the wing span and z completes a right handed system. Coordinates y and z are measured from the apparent vortex center. Coordinates n and s are measured perpendicular and parallel to the spiral wake centerline, defined as the locus of minimum mean axial velocity observed in the profiles.

Uncertainties in the measurements are given in the parent publication and in table 3 of W J Devenport, M C Rife, S I Liapis and G J Follin, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, vol. 312, pp. 67-106, 1996.
