American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is the aerospace engineering professional society. Our student branch is among the largest and most active in AIAA. Activities include regular meetings, a regional paper competition and design competitions. Dr. Patil is the faculty advisor.
Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers is the professional society for Ocean Engineers. Our student branch is very active and successful in SNAME national programs and design competitions. Members hold regular meetings and travel to the SNAME national meeting. Dr. Brown is the faculty advisor.
Sigma Gamma Tau is the national Aerospace honor society. Each semester the chapter selects the top Aerospace Engineering and Ocean Engineering juniors and seniors for membership. Dr. Seidel is the faculty advisor.
The Design Build Fly Team is an all-volunteer student organization at Virginia Tech. The Virginia Tech chapter of AIAA serves as our parent organization since the competition is sponsored by AIAA. Every year we construct a new radio controlled aircraft to complete a given set of missions, which are usually posted in late August with the competition occurring in mid-April. The competition location alternates annually between Wichita, KS and Tucson, AZ. Dr. Kapania is the faculty advisor.
