2009-04-29AOE Sophomore, Rosa Avalos, receives a Virginia Tech Diversity Program FellowshipDr. Rakesh Kapania
Rosa Avalos received the fellowship from the Virginia Tech Diversity Program for the Summer 2009. She will be working with a team of three faculty members and two post-doctoral fellows in the Multidisciplinary Analysis and Design Center for Advanced Vehicle on the design of an aircraft with a Truss-Braced Wing. The research; being led by Dr. Joseph A. Schetz, Holder of the Durham Chair in Engineering, is being conducted in response to a challenge given by the Chief Scientist at NASA Langley Research Center, Dr. Dennis Bushnell, to significantly increase the lift to drag ratio for future transport aircraft. Rosa, working with Dr. Rakesh K. Kapania, the Mitchell Professor of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering, and Dr. Manav Bhatia, a post-doctoral fellow in the department, will be helping with developing the structural model for the truss-supported wing using the finite element method. The structural model will be used for shape and size optimization, and aeroelastic studies.

2009-04-29AOE Sophomore receives a fellowship through the Virginia Tech Diversity ProgramDr. Leigh McCue
AOE Sophomore, Greg Annisette is awarded a fellowship through the Virginia Tech Diversity Summer Program. The fellowship will enable his undergraduate research on launch and recovery. His specific project seeks to advance the state of the art in using energy-based methods to predict quiescent periods for safe launch and recovery of an autonomous sea surface vehicle, and the methodology is analogous to historical work done for launch and recovery of helicopters from ships.

2009-04-23AOE Alumna, Laura Freeman, named 2009 Graduate School Woman of the YearLaura Freeman
Laura Freeman, AE ’05, is a PhD candidate in the Department of Statistics. In addition to this recognition as Graduate Woman of the Year, she has held the Amelia Earhart Fellowship, is President-Elect of the Graduate Student Assembly, and has been awarded a Virginia Space Grant Consortium Graduate Research Fellowship for her work on analyzing reliability data, with application to aircraft engines.

2009-04-14Undergraduate Students win award at the AIAA Regional Student conferenceLogan Thomas, Craig Sossi and Lawrence Hale
Logan Thomas, Craig Sossi, and Lawrence Hale, undergraduate students in Aerospace and Ocean Engineering, won third place in the Undergraduate Team division at the AIAA Regional Student conference. The conference for the mid-atlantic region was held this year at Old Dominion University on 3-4 April 2009. The team won for their research paper titled “Reliability in Unmanned Aerial Systems.” The research was advised by Drs. Marchman and Woolsey from the AOE department.

2008-10-30Jonathan Hall wins NASA International Year of Astronomy awardJonathan Hall
NASA has selected Aerospace Engineering junior Jonathan Hall for the International Year of Astronomy Award, which makes it possible for Jonathan to participate in the Student Ambassadors program for 2009. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the United Nations have proclaimed 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy to spread awareness of astronomy’s contributions to society and culture, stimulate young people’s interest in science, portray astronomy as a global peaceful endeavor, and nourish a scientific outlook in society. Specifically the award is granted by NASA to individuals to participate in activities both at their schools and in the greater community to advance astronomy and spread interest in NASA and space related fields.

2008-08-08AOE Alumna Shines at NASASherrica Newsome
Sherrica Newsome, An AOE student has been selected as an operations manager for the 2008 NASA Academy at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. She was accepted for into the NASA Academy at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center last Summer. The NASA Academy is a unique summer experience at the university level for developing future leaders of the U.S. Space Program. You can read more about NASA's Space Flight Center at the following url: http://www.tidewaternews.com/articles/2008/08/11/latest_news/breaking90.txt

2007-05-16 Dean's Graduate Teaching FellowshipMs. Karen ScottDr. Rakesh Kapania
Ms. Karen L. Scott has been selected to receive a College of Engineering Dean's Graduate Teaching Fellowship beginning in Fall 2007. The primary objective of the Graduate Teaching Fellow (GTF) Program is to better prepare interested doctoral students for the rewarding lifetime career of an academic in a university setting, with primary programmatic focus on the instructional aspects of being a faculty member.

Ms. Scott is a Ph.D. student working under the direction of Professor Rakesh K. Kapania. Before beginning her graduate studies at Virginia Tech, she earned a Master of Engineering with First Class Honors in Aeronautical Engineering at The Queen's University of Belfast, Ireland.

2007-05-16Yates Scholarship AwardWilliam Rock
Cadet Captain William Rock, AE '07, is the inaugural recipient of the Charlie L. Yates Scholarship for Leaders in Aerospace and Ocean Engineering. Cadet Rock was honored at a Scholarship Dinner at The Inn at Virginia Tech. He is shown here with Dr. William Grossmann (AE '58) and Dr. Charlie Yates (ME '58). The Yates Scholarship was made possible by a generous donation from Dr. Grossmann.

2006-04-05Wesley Slemp is selected as one of the seven undergraduate researchers to represent VT.Wesley SlempDr. Rakesh Kapania
Title: Estimation of Coulomb damping parameter by least squares regression analysis
The goal of this research was to determine a numerical algorithm for determining the plant parameters (natural frequency, Coulomb damping factor, and viscous damping factor) from measured initial displacement response of a mass-spring-damper system possessing both Coulomb and viscous damping. The study utilized least squares regression techniques to fit the measured initial displacement response to the known analytic solution of the equations of motion. The algorithm was tested through both numerical simulation and applied through experimentation of a linear-bearing system.

2005-11-15Four Students Win ASNE ScholarshipBassler, Geisbert, Good and Stepanchick
Four Students, Christopher Bassler, Jesse Geisbert, Nathan Good and Justin Stepanchick have won 2005-2006 American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) Scholarships. Since the program was inagurated in 1979, 390 ASNE scholarship awards have been awarded. Selection criteria is based on "the candidate's academic record, work history, professional promise and interest in naval engineering, extracurricular activities, and recommendations of collage faculty, employers, and other character references".
