In recent years, the US military has become more interested in operating air platforms in what has been called "near space". The regime provides advantages operationally, but imposes a unique set of technical challenges. DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, is currently pursuing a number of programs to
develop platforms in this regime and solve those technical challenges. The presentation intends provide an overview of the military strategy fo near space assets, the operational benefits and constraints of that regime, and a description and technical challenges of three DARPA programs: Vulture, Rapid Eye and ISIS. |
