“Near Space” is defined as that region of the stratosphere between 65,000 and 300,000 ft altitude where few aerospace vehicles currently operate for extended periods of time. New aeronautical vehicular concepts, including lighter- and heavier-than-air solar-powered vehicles are being considered as platforms for surveillance and communications missions. Heretofore, such missions have been accomplished using orbiting spacecraft. This presentation focuses on the promise of near-space platforms, and well as on the feasibility of, and technical challenges associated with these new vehicles operating in the near-space region for extended periods of time. Issues such as the power available and power required, and vehicular guidance and control in winds will be of special interest. |
