The AOE Machine Shop provides state of the art fabrication for students and faculty in Aerospace and Ocean Engineering. The machine shop staff, headed by Mr. James Lambert, brings together expertise in many areas, including CNC machining, conventional milling, rapid prototyping, and CAD, in support of the department’s research and teaching missions. The machine shop staff also handle communication and interactions with shops outside the university when special capabilities are needed to complete a job. The shop includes a designated area where undergraduate and graduate students are able to work using general fabrication equipment, once they have obtained the needed training certificate. Some of the shop’s many capabilities are listed below.

Machining

-conventional milling and lathe capability for general machining practices.
-3 axis CNC milling and 2 axis CNC lathe cutting using HAAS equipment for complex surfaces

Welding

-MIG, TIG, & Plasma Cutting capability.

Student Machine Shop

-Student Shop Area with general fabrication equipment available Mon-Fri 8-5pm (training certificate required for all students)

Rapid Prototyping

-3D model printing using the Objet Alaris 30 to provide mock-ups or in some cases, working components for design and research.
-Designing 3D printed parts for complex geometry and machined metal components for strength can allow composite mechanical assemblies to be created with shorter lead times.

-Mechanical design using Solidworks Professional
-3D modeling & 2D fabrication drawings capability
-Large assembly modeling
-additional consulting and support of the Autodesk family of products
-complete airfoil design and 3D model generation using point curve data.
