Undergraduate Design Virginia Tech Aerospace and Ocean Engineering students have
won more Aircraft, Spacecraft and Ship design awards than any
other students in the country in the international group design
competitions of the American Institute of Aeronautics and
Astronautics, major aerospace industries, NASA, and the Society
of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
Design is an important part of any engineering education.
Success in design education is an important measure of how well
a program prepares its graduates for success in the real world.
Virginia Tech's AE students won first place in the prestigious
AIAA/Lockheed Aircraft Design competition for five years in a
row and have been consistent winners in the AIAA's spacecraft
design competitions. We also participate in the NASA/AGATE
Design Program. One of our specialties is Computer-Aided
Design. The modern type of design uses the computer in almost
every facet. Our students use some of the same computer
software as is currently being used by the U.S. Navy.
The centerpiece of the senior year is the year long
"capstone" design course. This is an important course which
"brings it all together," teaching the students to
synthesize, optimize and compromise, using all their hard
earned background in areas like Aero/hydrodynamics, Populsion,
Structures, Flight and Vehicle Mechanics. Design teams are
often multi-disciplinary with students from other majors and at
different academic levels. To the right, you will find links to
some of the design projects that our students have developed in
past and present years.
