High Performance Computing

Enterprise

The following pictures are of the 512-processor SGI Origin 3800 donated to Virginia Tech Aerospace and Ocean Engineering by the High Performance Computing Modernization Program. The computer was delivered on April 11th 2005, and entered operation on September 16th 2005. The machine has been named "Enterprise", in honor of the space shuttle and aircraft carrier that bear the name. And, yes, the machine does math at warp-speed.

Enterprise is producing results. See the Numerical Investigation of Jet Injection into a Supersonic Cross Flow with Impinging Shocks page for more information.

This is one of the first times we powered on this big machine. (September, 2005)

A view down Enterprise center isle (the hot-isle). Note the air conditioners at the top of the photo, and also the green metal support-frames. The supports-frames were swapped in underneath the air conditioners after the original racks were removed; this physical preparation proved to be the most time-consuming challenge of the bring-up process. Also, the photographer who took this picture was standing on a stool. (September, 2005)

Cluster Resources

In addition to Enterprise, AOE maintains Atlantis, an 8 CPU PowerPC G5 cluster which is located in Randolph Hall. Atlantis is used primarily for gridMathematica, but MPI is supported as well. (April 2005)
