Coral eggs (top) and larvae of fish (middle) and prawns (bottom) are all displaced and dispersed during their early life cycles. Where they eventually take up residence depends not only on the direction of water currents but also on the patterns of those currents, which can be very complex, with characteristics including eddies, jets and stagnation zones.
